Throughout the piece, Born examines the current cultural context under which American babies are born. From an emotional, physical, and evolutionary perspective, Born delves into the postpartum experience in today's society.

Born observes “maternal instinct” and the hardwired physical, mental and spiritual changes of new motherhood. What are the chemical and hormonal reactions in her body?
